Derbyshire County Council to take action on A61

A short stretch of the A61 in Dronfield is to be resurfaced following residents reporting noise issues.

The road, from Bowshaw roundabout to Whittington Moor roundabout, was surface dressed in 2019. Surface dressing is carried out to extend the life of a road and is routinely carried out across the country and in Derbyshire.

Residents who live on roads nearby contacted Derbyshire County Council to say that the road was noisier after the surface dressing took place.

Work started last November to look at the issues, and some initial noise readings were taken. These showed that the noise levels at the side of the A61 were higher than expected from this type of road surface.

Highways officers expected that over the winter months the noise levels would reduce as more traffic on the road embedded the surface into place.

In the spring of this year more noise investigations were due to take place. Unfortunately because of the restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic this work has not taken place. A specialist company was due to take readings at the homes of those affected.

Just under a mile stretch will be resurfaced later this year. The work will coincide with maintenance work needed to the viaduct further down the A61, and will take place overnight.
