MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING OF DRONFIELD TOWN COUNCIL

HELD AT 7.30 pm ON MONDAY 14th MAY 2007 IN THE

DRONFIELD CIVIC HALL, DRONFIELD

Election of Town Mayor

 

Only one nomination was considered by members and it was duly

 

1/07-08    RESOLVED

 

That Councillor Islwyn Pryce be elected to serve as the Town Mayor for the Civic Year of 2007/2008.

 

The retiring Mayor then presented the Chain of Office to Councillor Pryce who made the statutory declaration of acceptance of office and assumed the chairmanship of the meeting.

 

Councillor Pryce then thanked his colleagues for bestowing this honour upon him and went on to thank the eight retiring Councillors for their dedication and commitment over the years.  The Councillors named and thanked were Nick Foster, David Hill, David Cheetham, Terry Furniss, Jon Williams, Martin Brader, Clive Gill and Ed Hodd.

 

The Mayor then introduced the eight new members of Council – Richard Bull, Philip Blackburn, Daniel Gage, Graham Gregory, John McGrory, Alan Memmott, Doug Oxspring and Beryl Skelton and wished them all well in their new role.

 

The Mayor expressed a hope that all meetings will be run efficiently and economically but that all members will be given an opportunity to speak and express their opinions.

 

He wished to ensure that the full council plays an active role in decision-making and offered sound advice!  If you don’t know the answer – just ask!

 

He then referred to the Mayor’s civic role of representing the town and looked forward to meeting the many and various groups and organisations that make the town so diverse and friendly.

 

He paid tribute to the voluntary organisations who do sterling work for charitable and social events.  He referred to the small anti social element and gave an example of how one voluntary group was actively trying to engage young people.

 

He nominated two recipients of the coming year’s Mayor’s Charity Appeal.  These will be.

 

·                    Dronfield & District Scouts who are celebrating their centenary this year.

 

·                    Gosforth School Playing Fields Association who have leased the former school’s playing fields and now cater for 700-1000 people involved in sporting activities on the 10 or so pitches.  Up to 100 young people can be seen training on the ground every night.

 

Vote of Thanks to Retiring Mayor

 

Councillor Mike Emmens welcomed the new Mayor and proposed a vote of thanks to Kathy Marr (the retiring Mayor).  He said she had been an outstanding Mayor and had represented the town at numerous events and functions.  Her charitable events and functions had raised £4,700 over the year and 50% of this was donated to the RSPCA (Chesterfield) and the other 50% being granted to local voluntary groups and organisations in the town.

Kathy Marr responding by thanking all members for their support and assistance over the past year, with special thanks being expressed to her daughter together with Mike Firth and Wendy Temple who had done so much in helping her raise the money for charity.

 

Election of Deputy Town Mayor

That Councillor Wendy Temple be elected to serve as Deputy Town Mayor for the Civic Year of 2007/2008.

Appointment of Co-ordinator and Deputy Coordinator

That Councillor Frank Higgins be appointed Co-ordinator of Policy and Finance for the Civic Year 2007/2008.

That Councillor Simon Temple be appointed Deputy Co-ordinator of Policy and Finance for the Civic Year 2007/2008.

 

Representatives on Outside Bodies 

 

Members considered a schedule of representatives and nominations for outside bodies with the town.

That the members named on the attached schedule be elected to serve as the Councils representative on the various outside bodies for the Civic Year 2007/2008 except those elected to serve as representatives on the Henry Fanshawe Foundation, who will serve for the tern of the Council 2007/2011.
